This is TECNO's second good attempt to enter the high-end (competitive) market. The Phantom X2 relies on the latest Mediatek Dimensity 9000 processor and unique minimalistic back panel design to impress us. I liked the 120Hz curved OLED display and decent battery life, but not the overall camera performance.
In recent years there has been a lot of competition in the mobile phone industry and many brands like OPPO, TECNO (www.TECNO-Mobile.com), Samsung, Huawei, Vivo, Realme, Xiaomi have released their new mobile phones. Product advanced features and designs that bring attractive products to the market. We've known TECNO since its inception and have enjoyed many of their creations over the past few years, focusing on affordable yet great looking phones that cater to customer needs. TECNO's success in emerging global markets is due to adapting its phone features to local market needs, always striving to provide the latest technology for the younger generation of consumers who are "young at heart". This new Phantom X2 model is only available in the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant, featuring the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC and the Mystery Design option.
We've been using this phone for two weeks and below you can read our review impressions using this device as our main phone, mainly for work but also for pleasure.
Tecno Phantom X2 - Specifications
As mentioned above, this is definitely a flagship smartphone. So let's see what it offers on the spec sheet:

- Operating System/Software : Android 12, HIOS 12.

Techno Phantom X2 - Design
One thing that sets this little beast apart from the rest of the phones on the market is of course the massive rear camera island, but we'll get to that later. The Phantom X2 has a 6.8-inch OLED display with a large 20:9 aspect ratio. The back could be vegan glass or leather "made from recycled materials from the Indian Ocean", which might be appealing to some, but not me. It has a curved screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a maximum brightness of 500 nits and a 120Hz refresh rate. 
"Phantom" is written on the back. It looks very interesting. I liked the way the back and front panels meet at the sides, providing good grip. Tecno calls it a "one piece double curve design". It feels great in the hand while working combined with a weight of 203 grams. However, please note that due to the camera island, the weight distribution is not correct. 
On the right side we find the volume rocker and power key with a red accent, very nice. An additional microphone is placed on top to reduce noise. Below is the bottom speaker, USB Type-C port, SIM tray slot and the main microphone. It doesn't have an IP68 rating, so you have to be careful.
Tecno Phantom X2 Screen
No complaints about color reproduction, viewing angles, animations and sharpness. The screen looks good. But 500 nits of brightness is a bit low by 2023 flagship standards, and this screen looks noticeably brighter in direct sunlight than the new iPhone or Samsung. When shooting outdoors, the screen is bright enough, there were no problems with visibility. It is coated with Gorilla Glass Victus and supports 2 color modes: Vivid Color and Original Color. 
I really appreciated that the Phantom X2 supports Widevine L1 certification. Enables other OTT streaming programs like Netflix and Amazon Prime to deliver HD quality, so you can enjoy your shows. Fortunately, it also supports three refresh rates: auto-shift, 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rate.
Techno Phantom X2 Review - Hardware
The driving force behind this smartphone is the Mediatek Dimensity 9000 SoC. It is a high-performance SoC with an integrated 5G modem. It has a fast Cortex-X2 core clocked up to 3 GHz, three additional A710 cores clocked up to 2.85 GHz and four energy-efficient cores (Cortex-A510) up to 1.8 GHz. The SoC is manufactured at the TSMC factory using a new 4nm process technology. It is clear that this is a decent SoC that can easily compete with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 which means it offers the best performance.
Also inside is a Mali-G710 MC10. It offers clock speeds up to 3.05GHz with 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UV 3.1 storage. The software is not slow or hot.
The Phantom 2 has only one speaker and music sounds great at all volume levels Call and video call sound is normal but nothing to brag about. Communication system is also good. Full signal in call state. Bluetooth is also good: I use a wireless headset phone every day for seamless navigation, and by the way, its GPS is perfect.
While running the Geekbench test, the temperature of the device reached around 39 degrees Celsius which is acceptable. As milestones; It scored 1241 points in the single-core test and 4130 points in the multi-core test. In the CPU acceleration test, it dropped to 79% of maximum performance.
I enjoyed playing good games like Genshin Impact or Call of Duty: Mobile. I didn't notice any braking or freezing while using it. The device warmed up a bit for an hour while playing Genshin Impact, but it didn't affect performance in any way.
Tecno Phantom X2 Review - Camera
Of course, the main reason to buy the Tecno Phantom X2 is its impressive triple camera setup. It offers various attractive features for youngsters, mainly:

Our review phone has a 64MP main sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 2MP sensor with LED flash. On the front optics, it packs a 64-megapixel selfie camera with OIS. It also has automatic eye tracking, a first for me, and it looks weird, reminds me of a sci-fi movie. Users can even take pictures while smiling! Camera app includes Super Night, Portrait, Google Lens, Beauty, Video, AI Cam and Short Video. The latter is designed for social networks and contains many additional visual elements.
It doesn't have a dedicated telephoto lens, but it does let you take digital zoom photos with the main camera. Night mode is also a bit disappointing; With a very slow shutter speed in low light conditions, photos come out worse than usual. However, sometimes it works perfectly.
TECNO has invested heavily in the photographic department and I think the results are impressive. I really liked the AR shot with animoji/stickers, the facial recognition software that can transform our face instantly, the portrait restoration technique that we can find built-in and of course the really cool bokeh effect!
Camera features
Phantom X2 also features Super Night 3.0 mode optimized for AI scene lighting, multi-frame blending optimization algorithm and advanced retouch recovery technology. As a result, it lightens the image, making it bright and natural even when shooting in the dark. Also, Ring Screen Fill Light provides a uniform 3D face fill light even in low light conditions.
Overall, the company added to the joy of using the camera and I spent a lot of time with it during our review.
There's also HDR/Super Night Mode/Panorama support, as well as 120/240 fps slow motion video, 2K slow motion, and the ability to take massive panoramic photos that will blow your mind. Beauty mode has optimized AI support for touching user's body parts! Now you can easily... lighten up at the push of a button 😉
Additional camera features
Given the camera setup, I was surprised at how good the daytime shots were in this review. The main sensor works great. Can't say if the depth/AI lens helps. This phone may be sold with only one camera at a time, but seeing how multi-camera phones are selling, every company is offering additional lenses. Night photos are good in bright light and even better in night mode. I don't think anyone will complain about the camera. 
Video stabilization is also on par, the only weak point I would say is that the wide angle lens and portrait lens struggle to focus in low light. Regardless, this is a camera system that can stand up to the biggest names in the business. This is a big achievement for Techno.
Techno Phantom X2 Review - Software
The phone comes with Android 12, which is pretty high for this price segment. This is not the first time I have used HIOS. It has all the features and functionality of a ROM available today. I have to mention that there is some malware and ads that we see in other similarly priced smartphones. There were no major flaws or limitations, and I think with a little polish HIOS could hold its own against other skins.
The setting is packed with lots of features, theme store and dark mode. We can find a memory booster app, Phone Master is a general helper app, a personal app store called Palm Store, AI Gallery, Ella, High Browser, High Translate, Palm Store and Bisha Player, Quick Apps is a great shortcut. An application for various games and applications that you can use without installation, a community program for techno, various tools and many other applications such as music stores, data sharing applications, etc. Especially in notifications, we are constantly bombarded with information and ads... The good thing is that we can get Google Apps and you can immediately start uninstalling apps you don't need. After 20-30 minutes the program becomes easier and more comfortable.
I feel that the people behind HIOS will do well in the future , as this very rich skin covers all user needs and does so with good speed and minimal power consumption. I hope Tecno will continue to release updates for this phone. However, Android 12 is already outdated and Tecno doesn't have a track record of delivering software updates on time. I'm not holding my breath knowing that Android 13 is coming soon.
Brief Description: Battery
The large 5160mAh Li-Po battery and TECNO's added software are a great combination, providing two days of light use or one day of moderate use (no gaming). SOT is around 7-8 hours, which is peak performance.
I was very impressed with the loading speed. The new 45W Type-C wall charger is an excellent addition to the range. It fully charges the device from 0% to 50% in 19 minutes and takes 59 minutes to charge from 0% to 100%. However, the phone doesn't support wireless charging, which is a shame for those who want it.
TECNO Phantom X2 Review - Conclusion
This is truly techno's most ambitious project in terms of hype and performance. It has an attractive design and innovative hardware for a real camera. It can easily meet your needs for social media photography and more. The main camera setup works well, but the lack of proper image and sound stabilization for video recording hurts the overall ambient performance.
